Sector 1
Disc 1

Train Platform
After the train is finished pulling into the station and Cloud and Barrett take down the first two guards start by making your way down the train platform. Hold Cancel to run. Along the way you will have to fight a few guards, but they’re no trouble at all. A single sword strike from Cloud is enough to finish them off.
Sector 1
Rejoin your AVALANCHE teammates and let them fill you in on some of the stuff that's gone down. You’ll be given the option to change Cloud's name. In my opinion no name other than Cloud fits him in my eyes. Don’t change it!
Follow the pathway and meet up with Barrett again. If you run into any guards along the way just use the Attack command. Magic is unnecessary and a waste at this point. Once Barrett is done his big monologue about Shinra and join up with Cloud you can talk to Biggs (the one on the left) to continue; then Jessie after that. The room in the bottom right has a chest with a Phoenix Down in it.
Barrett will blabber on about Shinra some more in the elevator. I wish I could say the boring talking parts of this game are quick and painless, but unfortunately it takes a few hours of work to get to the fun parts…
Jessie will lead the way down the stairs. Any enemies you might run into are still easy to take down with standard attacks. If either Cloud or Barrett get low on health just use a Potion during or after the battle. Follow Jessie down the pathway, and don’t forget to pick up the Potion sitting on the beam.
The last room is where you’ll be fighting the first boss of the game. It’s not too difficult, but don’t start the battle unprepared. Make sure Cloud and Barrett’s health are full before you initiate the battle. You won’t be able to equip the Restore Materia you find on the ground until you are taught how to do so in the game.

After you defeat Guard Scorpion and the timer starts you’ll have to make a hasty exit. Pressing pause doesn’t hold it up, nor will entering the save menu, so don't dawdle.
Make sure when run past Jessie you help her free her leg! If not, you’ll have to go back and find her. Once you’ve freed her she will come up and open the doors for you on the top floor. Sector 1 will then blow up and you’ll be treated to another nice interlude full of boring backgrounds. Character development can be painful sometimes.
Sector 8
Head up the stairs. No more random fighting as you proceed, thankfully. On your way out you will meet Aeris for the first time (the flower girl). The choices offered to you don’t really matter much in terms of game progress, but the game is gauging which of the female characters you like best for your date with one of them later on in the game. Choices you make at this particular meeting have little to no effect, but soon the choices you make when talking to people will improve your ratings with that particular character.
The next screen has a Potion lying on the ground on the left hand side. Don’t forget to pick it up on your way by. Your pathways will be blocked by a bunch of guards on the next street, but don’t worry you’re not fighting any of them… or at least you shouldn’t be. I wish random world fights gave you the option of opting out of the battle…
Another super exciting interlude to read through, yay! After you move into the forward car have a chat with Jessie at the front of the train. She’ll take you on a quick tour of Midgar on the computer screen. Go talk to Barrett after that. Talk to Barrett again once you get off the train.

7th Heaven
After you talk to Tifa and Marlene in 7th Heaven, try to walk back out the front door and Barrett will stop you. Brace yourself for some more fantastic background stories. Follow the whole team down the pinball machine/trap door.
On your way out the next day you’ll get a nice tutorial on how to use Materia, which you can finally start equipping and using. Click here for some advanced tactics.

Head down to the weapon shop after you leave 7th Heaven. Materia is available from the store on the left, and there is a free All Materia on the second floor in front of the red-shirt guy wearing the brown cap. After you pick it up a chest with an Ether will drop from the sky. This may seem odd to you, but chests fall from the sky at my house all the time.
Go back to the train station and board the waiting train; off to your next mission. Run to the front cars as they start locking cars down during the security check.
Once you find yourself in the Winding Tunnels head away from the screen. After another screen or two you’ll run into a blocked off wall. Make your way down the tube to the left of the blocked off doorway. There is a free Ether along the path, and a Tent near the save point along the way. All the paths end up in the same place so don’t worry about missing anything.
When you get to the reactor take the slide on the right hand side to get down to the bottom floor. This reactor has almost the same layout as the last one. Make your way to where Cloud planted the first bomb.
On your way out you’ll run into an ambush set by the President of Shinra.

After Air Buster is defeated he will leave a massive hole in the ground that Cloud ends up falling through. The reactor blows up before Tifa and Barrett can do anything.
