Chocobo Racing and Breeding

At the end of the game becomes possible for you to start breeding and racing your own Chocobos. To start off, you’ll need to purchase stalls for them at the Chocobo Farm. Head back there and talk to Choco Bill. Each stall will cost you 10,000 gil. Buy them all out, as you will probably end up using them all. Now you are ready to head out and start catching Chocobo’s. Buy some greens from Choco Billy in the barn before you leave.

You can now hunt for Chocobos almost anywhere in the world. Make sure to equip your Chocobo Lure before you start or else you’re fighting for nothing.

The different tracks around the world all yield different qualities of Chocobos. When you talk to Choco Billy about the Chocobo’s you have caught he will give you an assessment of the bird before anything is done to improve it. Here are the things he will say:

This…is a wonderful Chocobo!

This is a great Chocobo.

Mmm, this seems like a good Chocobo.

Mmm, this one’s not bad.

This is a pretty average Chocobo.

This one doesn’t seem to be very good.

I can’t recommend this one.

Obviously

Head to the Chocobo tracks outside Gold Saucer. Here you can catch good Chocobos. Grab two of them just to make sure that when you get your two wonderful Chocobos that you have two that are opposite sex. When you move them into the pens Choco Billy will say, “Mmm, this one’s not bad.”

Great Chocobo’s can be found at the tracks east of Mideel, Battles involving Spirals will yield Wonderful Chocobos. Choco Billy will say, “This is a great Chocobo.” when you move it into the pen.

These sayings correspond to the quality of your Chocobo. (Weak, Poor, Average, Good, Wonderful)

In order to breed the different color Chocobos you are going to need a Good Chocobo and a Great Chocobo that are the opposite sex.

Once you have a good and a great Chocobo that are the opposite sex you are set. Time to feed them. Make your way to the Chocobo Sage’s House.  If you need help finding it, click here.

Buy the best greens he sells, called Sylkis Greens, and feed them to your two Chocobos. I’m not sure how many greens it takes to max out a Chocobo’s stats. I’ve heard numbers anywhere from 20-100. To be safe I usually feed them about 50, each. So now you have two Chocobos (one Good, one Wonderful, and they aren’t the same sex) who are full of greens and ready to race.

Chocobo Racing

Chocobo Racing is important for a lot of reasons. Increasing a Chocobo’s class improves its chances of producing colored Chocobo’s when they mate and helps improve upon the stats they pass on to their offspring. Race your two Chocobo’s up to class S (it should be no problem).

Go to North Corel and take the tram across to Gold Saucer. Make your way to Chocobo Square and talk to Ester, who is standing off to the left of the counter. Choose a Chocobo and start the race.

Switch to manual controls by pressing select. Steering your Chocobo isn’t all that important, but manual controls allow you to recharge your Chocobo’s boost bar. Press and hold R1 and R2 for the duration of the race and your Chocobo’s stamina will slowly refill. Press start to end the race.

If your Chocobo is all over the place and won’t listen to you directing him, you have a useless Chocobo. There is no way to fix this, so you will have to decide to either replace it, or rank it as high as possible with the handicap.

Remember to take the GP anytime you win a race and don’t want the prize items. You’ll need a decent amount of GP later on for Battle Square.

Get your two Chocobo’s to Class A. Getting the good Chocobo from Class B to A can be a little difficult, but you should have no trouble getting the great Chocobo to Class A. You’ll probably lose the races that involve the black rider with the hat. I personally never race the great or good Chocobo past class A. Too much effort for too little payoff.

Time to mate your Chocobos. Make your way to the grassy plains around Bone Village and look for a monster called Vlakorados. Stealing from it will net you a Carob Nut, which you need to feed your Chocobo’s. Grab 3 or 4 of them while you’re there.

Head back to the Chocobo Farm and save just outside it, then talk to Choco Billy about mating your Chocobos. Mate the good Chocobo with the great one and you should get a blue or green Chocobo. If you don’t just reset the game until you get one of them. Feed your new Chocobo some Sylkis Greens and race it up to Class S.

The two Chocobo’s you mated should be ready to mate again. If they aren’t and Choco Billy is saying that they have mated too recently you will need to fight 10 battles to get rid of this. It has nothing to do with time. Go out and destroy ten enemies outside the farm. Wander over to the swamp and take out the snake. You don’t even have to move; he just comes back to you every time.

Save before you try this, and get them to mate using a Carob Nut again. You need to get whichever color you didn’t get before and it needs to be the opposite sex as your other Chocobo, reset if not.

Again, take this new color, feed it, and race it up to class S just like the last one. Now you need to mate your green one and blue one (even though they are technically siblings). Save before you try this, and use a Carob Nut on them again. You should get a black Chocobo. Reset if you don’t.

Now you need to get yourself another wild Chocobo that needs to be ‘wonderful’. Fly up to the area just outside Icicle Inn area and find the Chocobo track. Wonderful Chocobo’s can be caught here. Make sure it’s the opposite gender of your black Chocobo, and make sure you feed both the black and the wonderful Chocobo and race them to Class S to improve their odds of creating a Gold Chocobo.

Head out to the island in the top right corner of the map (called Goblin Island), park your Highwind on the island with the forests, and walk around in them for a while until you encounter a goblin. Steal a Zeio Nut from it when you get the chance.

Now mate your wonderful Chocobo with your black Chocobo, and keep trying until you get a Gold Chocobo. You can tell it’s a gold Chocobo when the color of the Chocobo matches the beak, it should all be one bright yellow color.

Rewards:

Blue Chocobo’s can walk over shallow water, green can climb over mountains, black can do both, while gold can do both and walk over oceans. Nowhere on the map you can’t go with a gold Chocobo.

Blue Chocobo (water):

Head to the southeastern tip of the map, near Mideel, and work your way east through the shallow waters. At the end you will reach a cave. Inside is a glowing blue pyramid. Examine it to receive Quadra Magic Materia.

NOTE: Black and Gold Chocobo’s can also reach this area.

Green Chocobo (Mountain):

Head to the island Wutai is located on, the one furthest west, and head south from the city. There is a small peninsula about half way down the island with a big mountain blocking the path. On the other side of the peninsula is a cave, and inside at the back is a yellow pyramid. Examine it to receive Mime Materia.

NOTE: Black and Gold Chocobo’s can also reach this area.

Black Chocobo (Water and Mountain):

The northern tip of the eastern continent, north of the entrance to the reactor above North Corel, and west of Costa del Sol, is a mountainous region with a river running around it. Across the river is a cave, and inside the cave is a purple crystal. Examine it to receive HP<->MP Materia. {24}

NOTE: Gold Chocobo’s can also reach this area.

Gold Chocobo (Water, Mountain and Ocean):

Head to an island located here {map}. Gold Chocobo’s can scurry across oceans. You will find a small cave surrounded by mountains. Inside the cave you will find a red pyramid. Examine it to receive Knights of the Round Materia.
