Kakariko Village

Welcome to Kakariko Village. It has to be one of the plainest places in the world. All you really have to do is head up to the north and show the guard Note from Princess Zelda. He will laugh and mock you, but one important thing he says is that you should equip a real shield. I suggest you head back to the Castle and purchase it. Now is as good a time as any.
You also get a discount for getting it now, as the guard told you. So buy a shield and come back here. While doing the Sun’s Song sidequest you can actually pick one up for free. Just enter the graveyard at nighttime and move one of the graves back, inside you will find a Shield. If you already have one you can proceed. There are a few sidequests you can do in Kakariko village though:
